Osijek rolls into the future with its first new low-floor tram in 43 years
Mayor Radić: "This day marks a new chapter in our city's legacy"
The future of Osijek’s public transport is here – today, the city unveiled the first of 10 new trams. The TMK 2500, a state-of-the-art low-floor model manufactured by KONČAR, is the first new tram to grace Osijek’s tracks in 43 years.
At 20.8 meters long, the tram accommodates 135 passengers and features cutting-edge technology. Designed with accessibility in mind, it is set to debut on Osijek’s modernized tram network following a successful testing phase.
Mayor Radić emphasized that the EUR 45 million upgrade of Osijek’s tram infrastructure, launched in spring 2022, was a crucial step in making the new trams a reality. He expressed gratitude to residents for their patience throughout the modernization process. "This is only the beginning. In addition to these 10 low-floor trams, we have a framework agreement for 10 more. With the support of the Croatian Government and the Ministry of Transport, we are building a 20-tram fleet that will fully meet the city's public transport needs," he stated.
Ivan Paić, a member of KONČAR’s Management Board, highlighted that Osijek’s new tram is not only a striking addition to the city but also a key step toward sustainable urban mobility. "At KONČAR, we do more than manufacture trains and trams – we actively support the development of energy infrastructure vital for sustainable public transport. Osijek’s investment in modernization sets a strong example for Croatia’s green transition. As a city of youth, education, and vibrant life, Osijek will soon see these trams become an integral part of daily commutes and cherished city experiences," Paić said, confirming that the remaining trams will be delivered by the end of the year.
"For generations, trams have been part of Osijek’s story, and today, they make history once more – a history we proudly embrace. But today, we celebrate not just the past, but the future. Trams shape our city’s daily rhythm, connecting people and places, and with this new low-floor tram, we are stepping into a new era. I firmly believe that the future of public transport in Osijek begins today," Mayor Radić concluded.
