HOPS and KONČAR sign contract for the installation of a phase-shifting transformer at Gračac substation as part of the GreenSwitch project

The new technology will enable more efficient power flow management and contribute to greater security and flexibility of Croatia’s transmission network.

At the headquarters of the Croatian Transmission System Operator (HOPS), a contract was signed between HOPS and KONČAR for the procurement and installation of a Phase-Shifting Transformer (PST) at the Gračac substation. Representatives of the Ministry of Economy also attended the signing ceremony. The project marks an important step in the modernization of Croatia’s transmission network within the framework of the international GreenSwitch initiative.

The PST will enable more precise control of active power flows in the transmission network, increasing its flexibility, security, and efficiency. This advanced technological solution contributes to the more effective utilization of existing power infrastructure, particularly in the context of increasing integration of renewable energy sources and growing needs for managing both cross-border and internal electricity flows.

“The Gračac project is an excellent example of how Europe’s energy transition increasingly relies on advanced grid solutions that enhance the efficiency, flexibility, and resilience of power systems. For KONČAR, this represents an important milestone, as we are bringing together the expertise of several Group companies and delivering a comprehensive, high-value-added solution. Projects such as this contribute to the development of Croatia’s energy infrastructure while simultaneously confirming the competitiveness of domestic industry,” said Gordan Kolak, President of the Management Board of KONČAR.

HOPS emphasized the importance of investing in advanced technological solutions that enable more reliable and efficient operation of the power system. “By doing so, we are strengthening our ability to manage electricity flows and further improving the security and flexibility of the transmission network. This is an important prerequisite for integrating an increasing share of renewable energy sources and developing a power system capable of meeting the challenges of the energy transition. The GreenSwitch Project allows us, with the support of the European Union and in cooperation with international partners, to continue developing infrastructure that is essential for a secure and reliable electricity supply,” stated Renata Rubeša, Member of the HOPS Management Board.

The investment is being implemented as part of the international GreenSwitch Project, which is co-financed by the European Union through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF Energy) programme, with a co-financing rate of 50 percent of eligible costs.

The project brings together seven partners from Croatia, Slovenia and Austria and is focused on the modernization and digitalization of power infrastructure, increasing transmission and distribution capacities, and developing advanced solutions for more flexible and secure management of power systems.

In addition to the installation of the PST at the Gračac substation, HOPS is implementing the reconstruction of the Senj-Brinje transmission line using High-Temperature Low-Sag (HTLS) conductors and developing an advanced platform for optimized congestion management within the transmission network.

The project will further strengthen the reliability and resilience of Croatia’s power infrastructure and create the conditions necessary for the continued integration of renewable energy sources and the successful implementation of the energy transition. At the same time, it demonstrates KONČAR’s ability to participate in the delivery of complex infrastructure projects of strategic importance to both the Croatian and European energy sectors through its own technological solutions and the synergy of companies within the Group.
