KONČAR, one of Croatia’s leading technology and industrial companies, today officially presented a new milestone in Croatian mobility and infrastructure development at InnoTrans 2026 in Berlin, the world’s largest transport technology trade fair – a bimodal Electro-Diesel Multiple Unit for long-distance transport. Following its entry into regular passenger service on the Zagreb–Split route one week earlier in cooperation with HŽ Passenger Transport, the second train from this series was now introduced to the international public. Through the global premiere of the latest solution for more modern, comfortable and sustainable passenger transport, KONČAR once again demonstrated that knowledge, expertise and technologies developed in Croatia can compete alongside the leading names in the European rail industry.

InnoTrans once again brought together the world’s leading manufacturers, operators, transport providers and experts in transport technology, railways, public transport and sustainable mobility. Among the most visited areas of the exhibition was the outdoor display section featuring 3,500 metres of track, where 130 exhibitors from 17 countries showcased a total of 113 vehicles, including the latest generations of trains, locomotives and alternative propulsion vehicles. In this highly competitive international environment, KONČAR is exhibiting for the tenth time, showcasing technologies developed and manufactured in Croatia and further strengthening its position among Europe’s relevant manufacturers of modern rolling stock and advanced solutions for sustainable urban mobility.

Two years after becoming the only exhibitor at InnoTrans to present a Battery Multiple Unit, which subsequently became the first such product in commercial operation in Europe and among the first globally, KONČAR has now displayed its new bimodal Electro-Diesel Multiple Unit in one of the most prominent positions within the outdoor exhibition area, occupying a dedicated 75-metre section of track. At the same time, the company presented latest solutions for railway infrastructure, electrification, urban mobility and transport digitalisation in the indoor exhibition space, further highlighting its capability to independently develop and deliver integrated technological solutions for the transport systems of the future.

One train, two power sources and no compromises. This was the guiding principle behind the development of KONČAR’s new bimodal Electro-Diesel Multiple Unit, which combines the advantages of electric and diesel traction while enabling uninterrupted operation across both electrified and non-electrified sections of the railway network. Additional operational flexibility is provided by the ability to control up to three coupled trainsets from a single driver’s cab, allowing capacity to be adapted to actual transport requirements. As such, the train represents a direct response to the need for more sustainable and efficient long-distance rail transport across mixed infrastructure networks and is the result of years of experience and proprietary development at KONČAR – Electric Vehicles.

With the introduction of this train, KONČAR further completes its unique train development portfolio. Following electric, diesel-electric and battery-powered trains, the company is now bringing a fourth propulsion platform, developed and manufactured in Croatia, to the market. The new train also serves as one of the strongest references for the long-standing and successful application of Croatian products in domestic rail transport. The model that entered regular service last week is the 70th train delivered by KONČAR to HŽ Passenger Transport, further confirming the shared commitment of both companies to the modernisation of Croatia’s railway system.
