History

Founded in 1972 as Rade Končar - Electric Locomotives, we rebranded to KONČAR - Electric Vehicles in 2005 to reflect our evolving focus and expanding capabilities.

Our journey began with the production of diode electric locomotives under a license from the Swedish company ASEA. By 1981, our in-house development led to the creation of a state-of-the-art thyristor locomotive for a 25 kV, 50 Hz power system.

Over the years, we have modernized more than 400 electric locomotives for railways in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Romania, Bulgaria, and Turkey. In 2003, we embarked on the development of 100% low-floor trams, with serial production and delivery starting in 2005.

In 2005, we launched a low-floor train project, leading to a 2008 contract with the Railways of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina to deliver the EMU RP, marking our first low-floor train. To date, we have manufactured and delivered 55 low-floor EMUs and 5 low-floor DEMUs.

Our current development projects include battery multiple units (BMUs) and battery electric multiple units (BEMUs). In the realm of special development projects, we have successfully completed our first measurement train, marking a pioneering achievement in our manufacturing capabilities.

Our team consists of nearly 400 dedicated employees, with over a third holding higher education degrees. At the heart of our approach is ongoing professional development, ensuring we stay at the forefront of industry advancements.

With more than 80 engineers and master’s graduates in electrical and mechanical engineering, we bring substantial expertise to the development of electric vehicles and their subsystems.
