Upgrading the excitation system at Krško hydropower plant
Work is currently underway to upgrade the control electronics of the excitation system at the Krško Hydropower Plant (HPP Krško) in Slovenia, targeting the second of three generators.
As the fourth facility in a sequence of six plants along the Lower Sava River, HE Krško has a nominal capacity of 39.12 MW, powered by three vertical generators with a nominal flow of 500 m³/s and an average annual output of 146 GWh. This upgrade is critical for improving operational reliability by minimizing the frequency of malfunctions, standardizing secondary equipment across the entire hydropower network, and streamlining maintenance through a unified set of spare parts and software solutions.
The outdated control system has been replaced with a dual-channel digital regulator, while the energy components of the original excitation system have been retained to maintain continuity and performance. As part of the modernization effort, the existing control cabinet has been completely replaced with a newly manufactured, factory-assembled, and rigorously tested unit. The full scope of work includes a detailed assessment of the current system, the design of a new control system for the synchronous generator's excitation system, and the development of an adaptation plan that integrates system modifications and upgrades. This also involves the manufacturing and factory testing of components, all site preparation work, installation, system testing, and final commissioning. Additionally, the project includes thorough training for the customer’s personnel to ensure effective operation and maintenance.
The commissioning of the newly upgraded system is expected by March, with the third system’s replacement scheduled for 2025.
