Battery storage system on Vis island enters trial phase
At the Vis solar power plant (SPP Vis), with a capacity of 3.5 MW, we installed a state-of-the-art 1 MW / 1.44 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS Vis).
This system is primarily designed to reduce peak loads and balance the power flow at the 35/10(20) kV Vis substation, optimizing performance during the island's high-demand summer season.
Beyond these core functions, BESS Vis offers additional capabilities, including voltage regulation, reducing energy losses, stabilizing rapid fluctuations in output, and improving production forecasts.
In the long term, the system could be further integrated into Croatia’s energy market, offering reserve services and energy arbitrage as regulations and market mechanisms evolve. Delivered as a turnkey solution, our work included system design, manufacturing, installation, and commissioning. The system is connected to the 10 kV grid via the existing medium-voltage connection at SPP Vis. A technical inspection took place in mid-November 2022, with the operational permit expected shortly.
