Upgrade of the existing Vis SPP with a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and its integration into a microgrid
Enhancing energy independence, grid stability and the efficient utilisation of locally generated renewable energy
The existing Vis Solar Power Plant (SPP) has been upgraded with a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and integrated into a microgrid. This solution enables surplus energy generated from renewable sources to be stored and utilised during periods of increased demand or whenever additional grid support is required.
The value of the project is particularly evident in an island environment, where electricity consumption rises significantly during the tourist season, while lower-demand periods may result in excess solar generation. Energy storage allows these fluctuations to be effectively managed through peak shaving, balancing services, consumption optimisation and grid stability support.

For the distribution system operator, the solution provides greater network management flexibility, reduced peak loads, enhanced balancing capabilities and more efficient integration of renewable energy sources. As a result, local grid stability is improved, the need for additional infrastructure interventions is reduced and the foundation is established for more advanced energy management across island communities.
End users benefit from a more reliable power supply, improved voltage quality and increased system resilience in exceptional operating conditions. At the same time, the project contributes to the sustainable development of the island by enabling more efficient use of locally generated clean energy and delivering greater value to the local community.
