Ultra-fast EV charging station commissioned at Kvarner rest area

In November 2025, an ultra-fast electric vehicle (EV) charging station was commissioned at the Kvarner rest area.

The station was built under a concession agreement signed between the consortium KONČAR Inc. and Enakon Mobility Ltd. for services, on one side, and BINA Istra Ltd. on the other. The concession was granted for a period of 16 years.

The Kvarner rest area is located on the eastern side of the Učka tunnel entrance and is classified as a double rest area, meaning both motorway directions share rest facilities on the same side. Under the agreement, an Ultra-Fast Charging (UFC) station with 4 charging points and an associated transformer substation was constructed.

The new 20/0.4 kV transformer substation was built as a standard prefabricated concrete substation type DTS 2x1250 kVA. The ultra-fast charging station consists of modular rectifier blocks that convert alternating voltage and current (AC) from the power grid into direct voltage and current (DC) for EV charging. Currently, one block with a capacity of 600 kW has been installed. This block powers 4 charging points equipped with CCS2 connectors, which under optimal conditions can deliver up to 240 kW, enabling vehicle charging in less than 15 minutes. The agreement allows for an upgrade to 10 charging points.

The following KONČAR companies participated as equipment suppliers and service providers: Electronics and Informatics, Switchgear, and Distribution and Special Transformers.

In parallel with this agreement, a concession contract was signed for the construction of ultra-fast charging stations at Mirna North and Mirna South rest areas, located in Istria near Novigrad. According to the contract, these stations will feature up to 8 charging points. Project documentation is currently being prepared, and construction completion is planned before the start of the next tourist season.
