Railway electrification and traction power upgrade on the Moravice–Rijeka–Šapjane, Škrljevo–Bakar, and Sušak Pećine–Rijeka Brajdica sections

The railway electrification and traction power upgrade mark a long-awaited continuation of voltage standardization across Croatia’s railway network, a process initiated in 1987 on the Zagreb–Moravice section.

The project was executed by a KONČAR and Dalekovod consortium, with a total investment exceeding EUR 70 million. Due to the challenging geographical terrain, the upgrade was carried out on a railway section spanning 132.2 km in total construction length.

Scope of work – KONČAR Inc.:
  • Construction of traction substations in Delnice, Plase, Vrata, Matulji, and Sušak, along with the reconstruction of traction substation Moravice
  • Installation of sectioning posts at Skrad, Lokve, Drivenik, Sv. Kuzam, and Rijeka to improve power distribution
  • Development of the Remote Control Center (RCC) Rijeka, enabling centralized monitoring and management
  • Implementation of a local control system for overhead line disconnectors at 20 railway stations, enhancing operational efficiency
  • Deployment of an advanced telecommunications system for remote control and railway communications
  • Reconstruction of power supply connections and low-voltage (LV) networks at multiple railway stations
  • Integration of signaling and safety systems with the newly upgraded electrification and traction power infrastructure

Scope of work – Dalekovod d.d.: 
  • Upgrading and modifying the overhead contact line system
  • Reconstruction of line crossings to improve safety and reliability
  • Construction of the Delnice special traction substation building
  • Installation of trackside cabling infrastructure to support the electrification system
