Strengthening ties with Iraq through medium-voltage solutions
At the end of January 2024, we successfully dispatched medium-voltage switchgear for the 33/11 kV, 31.5 MVA substation in Iraq.
This project, commissioned by Baghdad-based Mawj Al-Taif General Trading, marks our exciting return to the Iraqi market.
The shipment included air-insulated 36 kV and 12 kV BVK switchgear, designed to seamlessly integrate into Iraq's distribution power network. Our engineers meticulously developed these systems to comply with the latest IEC standards and meet the specific technical requirements outlined by the Ministry of Electricity – Energy Distribution Office (MoE). These requirements reflect the unique challenges of operating in Iraq’s harsh environmental conditions, such as extreme heat and dust.
To address these demands, we ensured the switchgear featured advanced protective measures and robust designs. The equipment was fitted with vacuum circuit breakers produced at our Zagreb facility and multifunctional numerical relays developed by our team at KONČAR – Electronics and Informatics. Assembly and testing took place at our Dicmo facility near Split, where every component was rigorously inspected to guarantee quality and reliability.
Transporting the switchgear to Iraq presented its own set of challenges. Although maritime shipping is often the default option for such projects, concerns about Red Sea security risks, rising freight costs, and extended delivery times led us to choose overland transport. The equipment embarked on a nearly two-week journey through Turkey and Kurdistan, ultimately arriving in Baghdad safely and on schedule.
