Project overview:

KONTRAC GP170DC_SK project is dedicated to driving innovation in the development of high-performance equipment that enhances energy efficiency in transport systems. Electric rail vehicles are increasingly central to the sustainable growth of urban environments due to their outstanding energy efficiency, reduced environmental footprint, and ability to transport both passengers and freight. To preserve these advantages and push them further, continuous development and the application of cutting-edge technologies are essential.

A major focus of this project is improving energy efficiency by capturing and storing braking energy from rail vehicles. This stored energy can then be reused to power the vehicle, enabling partial autonomous operation without relying on overhead lines.

Goals and expected outcomes:

The project aims to achieve several critical objectives, including the development of a new main drive converter for rail vehicles, integrated with an energy storage system that captures braking energy for later use. Additionally, the project will deliver an energy storage system equipped with a built-in balancing mechanism for optimal voltage load distribution. By creating and implementing advanced control algorithms to manage charge and discharge cycles, the project will significantly improve energy efficiency and maximize the lifespan of the storage system. Comprehensive technical documentation for the serial production of both the main drive converter and the energy storage system will also be completed. An important outcome of the project will be the registration of trademarks and industrial designs for the newly developed product, ensuring protection of intellectual property.

The project’s achievements have already been showcased at the PEDG 2020 international conference.

Furthermore, the project has facilitated the acquisition of new equipment, and two types of converters have been successfully developed.
