Ceremonial commissioning of the new Gratkorn hydropower plant near Graz
In mid 2021, we signed a contract for the delivery of two new generators as part of the construction of the Gratkorn Hydropower Plant near Graz.
The contract was signed with the ARGE Gratkorn consortium, comprising the Austrian power utilities Verbund Hydro Power and Energie Steiermark Green Power.
The scope of the contract included the manufacturing, delivery, installation, and commissioning of two generators (SB 4857-56, 7 MVA, 5 kV, 107 rpm, 50 Hz), as well as the associated excitation systems, spare parts, and special tools and equipment.

On 4 October 2024, Verbund and Energie Steiermark commissioned the new run-of-river hydropower plant on the River Mur in Gratkorn, north of Graz. It is the most advanced hydropower facility of its kind, with a total investment of approximately EUR 100 million. “After around two and a half years of construction, the hydropower plant now delivers an output of 11 megawatts and generates approximately 54 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, supplying up to 15,000 households,” it was stated at the commissioning ceremony. To mark the occasion, an Open Day was also held for the public.
This greenfield project, involving the construction of a completely new hydropower plant, lasted nearly four years.
With the addition of this new facility, Verbund now operates 43 hydropower plants in Styria, four of which (Gössendorf, Kalsdorf, Graz, and Gratkorn) are jointly operated with Energie Steiermark.
The ceremony was attended by representatives of the investors and the Province of Styria, as well as representatives of all contractors, including our team, who expressed pride in having been part of this important project.
