Two generators installed at Austria’s new Gratkorn HPP

In mid-2021, we finalized a contract with the ARGE Gratkorn consortium, comprising Austrian power utilities Verbund Hydro Power and Energie Steiermark Green Power, for the supply of two generators.

The scope of the contract includes manufacturing, delivery, installation, and commissioning of two generators (SB 4857-56, 7 MVA, 5 kV, 107 rpm, 50 Hz), as well as associated excitation systems, spare parts, and specialized tools for the Gratkorn HPP.

Gratkorn HPP, located on the Mura River in Graz, within the municipality of Gratkorn, is a state-of-the-art hydropower plant designed to supply electricity to around 15,000 households.

A notable feature of this project is its greenfield nature, meaning the entire facility was constructed from the ground up.

A project of this scale requires substantial effort, close collaboration with other contractors, and the ability to navigate numerous challenges—all of which we have successfully and professionally addressed.

Work on the plant commenced in August 2023, and the installation of both generators (G1 and G2) was completed by the end of January 2024.

With multiple contractors working on-site simultaneously, we collaborated closely with Kochendörfer for the turbines, Steiner-Bau for civil construction, and Siemens, which managed the control systems.

The final step in the project is the commissioning, expected to take place in May for G1 and June for G2.
