Major new revitalization project for a HPP in Germany

In April 2023, we received a request to bid on the delivery of four motor-generators and corresponding excitation systems for the Happurg Pumped Storage Hydropower Plant (PSHP) in Germany, owned by Uniper Kraftwerke, a long-standing partner.

Uniper Kraftwerke, one of the foremost energy providers in Germany and Europe, aims to revitalize the Happurg plant to leverage hydropower potential and strengthen its contribution to renewable energy storage.

Happurg Pumped Storage Hydropower Plant (PSHP)

Located in the municipality of Happurg, about 30 km northeast of Nuremberg in the Nürnberger Land district, the Happurg PSHP has an installed capacity of 160 MW. The first two units were commissioned in 1958, followed by the second two in 1963 and 1965. These units remained in operation for more than 45 years, until damage to the upper reservoir in January 2011 forced the shutdown of all units and most auxiliary facilities.

Uniper Kraftwerke plans to restart the Happurg plant, which will involve comprehensive revitalization measures. Following 15 months of dedicated work on the proposal and negotiations, we secured this highly valuable contract in July 2024.

Under the contract, we will deliver four new motor-generators with specifications of 49.3 MVA, 50 Hz, 375 rpm, and 10.5 kV. The contract also includes the provision of four brushless excitation systems from KONČAR – Electronics and Informatics, along with the dismantling and removal of the current generators. The full scope of work covers engineering, production, installation of the new generators, as well as their testing and commissioning.
