Activities underway for the Nam Sam 3 project in Laos
In October 2021, following extensive negotiations, we secured a contract for the design, manufacturing, factory testing, and delivery of three generators, alongside the supply of excitation and monitoring systems, for the Nam Sam 3 project.
This greenfield project entails the construction of a hydroelectric plant with three vertical units, each equipped with Francis turbines rated at 61.7 MVA, on the Nam Sam River in the Houaphan region of Laos. Voith’s Indian subsidiary was selected to provide the hydromechanical equipment, with KONČAR taking on the role of subcontractor.
Once operational, the Nam Sam 3 Hydroelectric Plant will transmit electricity from Laos to Vietnam through the 220 kV distribution network, helping to alleviate power shortages in nearby regions of Vietnam. The plant is expected to generate 626 GWh per year.
Our contractual responsibilities include supplying three generators, along with spare parts, specialized tools, and associated equipment. We will also provide three static excitation systems from KONČAR – Electronics and Informatics and three monitoring systems from KONČAR – Institute of Electrical Engineering, while overseeing the assembly and commissioning phases.
The project has entered the civil construction phase, with the installation and commissioning of the generators and supporting equipment planned for completion in the first quarter of 2024.
This initiative continues to strengthen our footprint in Southeast Asia.
