Run for Down
On Saturday, 18 May 2024, we were proud participants in the vital humanitarian race, Run for Down, held at Lake Bundek. This was the third donor race organized in collaboration with the Down Syndrome Association and the Perpetuum Mobile Athletic Club.
Run for Down is an extensive initiative that gathers funds for the Association’s work while encouraging social interaction and community for children and individuals with Down syndrome.
The Down Syndrome Association advocates for the rights and interests of individuals with Down syndrome in the City of Zagreb and Zagreb County. Since 1999, the Association has expanded to include over 280 members with Down syndrome. It actively runs various programs, participates in numerous projects, and conducts a wide array of workshops. Their work supports individuals with Down syndrome from early childhood through kindergarten, preschool, school age, and all the way to preparation for independent living.
The aim of the Run for Down race is to highlight the importance of sports in fostering the biological and psychosocial development of individuals with Down syndrome and to enhance their motor skills. Children with Down syndrome take part in this event. Before the 5,000-meter run and the 1,700-meter walk, a special short-distance race is organized for them, offering an opportunity to participate and allowing others to cheer them on enthusiastically.
One day, thanks to this short-distance race, the support, and the enthusiasm they experience at this heartwarming and impactful event, one of these participants might “go the distance” and complete a marathon. Marathon runners with Down syndrome are becoming increasingly common.
We brought together over 40 employees, who were joined by their families, friends, neighbours, and even dogs, to support the race through donations, participation, and cheering for individuals with Down syndrome. Our team members were also encouraged to bring their children. This event marks our second involving employees’ children, with the youngest participants being just two and three years old.
Empathy, solidarity, and selflessness are nurtured from an early age.
Among our team and their children were Josip (6.5), who came to support his hospital friend, brothers Martin and Andrija, who cheered on their younger brother, and colleague Ivan, who participated for his friend’s son. There was an abundance of support for both familiar and new faces in the 150-meter race, as well as for the Association and its mission.
Everyone received medals, all gleaming gold, symbolizing that everyone was a winner. Yet, the true champions were the 150-meter runners.
